We've all heard the saying, "It's not where you start, it's where you finish." For me, this couldn't be more true. After spending just over five years in prison and being released in 2014 at the age of 28, I could have easily let my past dictate my future. Instead, I realized that I had to take ownership for my actions and use my mistakes as a catalyst for personal growth and success.
Growing up, I made a series of poor decisions that eventually led me to being sentenced to prison at the age of 22. It was during this time, staring at the blank ceiling of my cell, that I began to reflect on my life and purpose. I remember the moment that I realized that I could not allow my past dictate my future. If anything was going to change, I would have to make it.
While serving my sentence, I found solace in reading self-help books and educating myself on personal development. It was during this time that I discovered the power of faith and the importance of having a growth mindset. I knew that my future self was counting on me to make a radical change. So, I made a commitment to rewrite my narrative.
It has been a difficult climb, but, the climb is difficult by design. It makes you work harder, think smarter, and become a better version of yourself. It is the climb that makes you realize your true potential - It's not about reaching the summit, it's about becoming the greatest version of yourself through the process.
Upon getting released, I faced the challenge of rebuilding my life and creating a new path in a new environment. I moved across the country to South Carolina in my aunt & uncles basement and got a job at a small seafood restaurant downtown Columbia called the Blue Marlin. I had this idea in my head that I had to work twice as hard as the person next to me because of my wrap sheet.
So what did I do? I worked my ass off, saved money and invested countless hours in self education, with the ultimate goal of becoming something a person of value. It wasn't easy, but after many late nights, early mornings, failures, accomplishments, and everything in between; I eventually I caught my stride and found success in the real estate investing industry.
I made a commitment to myself to rewrite my story, and through hard work, perseverance, and a positive mindset, I was able to turn my life around. I am living proof that no matter how difficult the climb may be, with the right attitude and determination, you can overcome any obstacle and achieve greatness.
It is never too late to start over, to rewrite your story and make a better life for yourself. All it takes is a little bit of grit and grace - a commitment to take ownership of your actions, strive for personal growth and being a person of your word.
Remember, it's not where you start it's where you finish. I haven't forgotten where I came from. It was the bottom that made me. I was presented with an opportunity for change and I took it. If I can do it, anyone can.
Take control of your thoughts. Your thoughts lead to beliefs. Believes become reality.
